Ode to Alemany Farmers Market
by Angie Minkin
Fall harvest jumps at our farmers market,
a bursting sanctuary of plenty: pears, orange persimmons, red pomegranates, parsley, dark green and fragrant. A sharp hint of winter’s rains. Still, for now, the sun shines. I want to drink that lovely elixir of sun, soil, and life. May the gods be kind, let me in this church of makeshift structures. This is how I pray: in tongues I don’t speak, with masses of folks. Hipsters bop, men stroll, young women laugh and chat. We’re all seeking good deals, ripe tangerines, the freshest rolls. Rosa beams when I buy her sunflowers. Seagulls and crows carve clouds, circle for hours. |
