Hunger
by Joe Catalano
Tom: “Fella ain't got a soul of his own, just a little piece of a big soul, the one big soul that belongs to everybody. Then it don't matter [what happens to me]. Wherever they’s a fight so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there . . . an’—I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry n’ they know supper’s ready . . . ”
The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck |
Hunger has the persistence of the incoming tide.
Even if dammed it rises to top of mind and sours every thought with its bile. No sunset glorious, or star wishful, Hunger’s pall shrouds all. But nothing so mournfully as the silenced laughter of children, When suppertime comes and goes without. |
